Designed for the University of Tennessee Press, the book, Athens of the New South, is about how the city of Nashville transitioned into a major city in the south through education and tourism. I focused on creating a type treatment that would incorporate the title into the landscape of the image provided by the author. I used Bodoni exclusively on the front and back, as Bodoni is a modern style that has undergone many transitions throughout the years in various releases of the typeface—just like the transitions that Nashville has undergone. The letters rise out of the landscape of Nashville in this image just as Nashville rose out of the south as a hub of modern ideas and superior education. The cover was awarded Gold at both the local and district levels of the American Advertising Awards Student Division.
